How it works

Add up the implied probabilities of every side. The amount over 100% is the overround. Each method shares that excess out differently. Multiplicative scales every side by the same factor. Additive takes the same number of points off each side. Power raises every side to the same exponent until the total lands on 100%, which puts more of the margin on long shots. Most conservative takes the lowest fair probability any method gives for each side, so an edge is never overstated.

Worked example

−110 on both sides of a spread implies 52.38% each, 104.76% in total. Every method lands on 50% and 50%, fair odds of +100 each, and the book keeps 4.55% of the money bet.

When to use it

A check does this for you when it can match both sides of your leg. Use the tool when you have the two prices in hand, for example a sharp book’s line, and want the fair probability to feed into the Expected Value or Kelly tools.

Questions

Which method should I use?

Multiplicative is the common default and is fine for prices near even. Power and additive tend to fit lopsided markets better, because books load more margin onto long shots. If you are unsure, use most conservative and accept a slightly smaller edge.

Why do the most conservative probabilities add to less than 100%?

Because each side shows the lowest figure any method produced. The sides can come from different methods, so they do not sum to exactly 100%. That is the point: no side is flattered.

Why is the additive result missing?

Additive subtracts the same number of points from every side. In a very lopsided market a long shot can have fewer points than that share, so the method cannot price it. The other methods still can.

Can I use it for a three-way market like soccer?

Yes. Choose three-way and enter the home, draw and away prices. Each method shares the overround across all three sides.

What does hold mean?

The share of the money bet that the book keeps on a balanced market. It is 1 minus 100% divided by the total implied probability. The Vig tool explains it in more detail.
